Things to Consider

Golden retrievers live on an average of 10 to 12 years of age and generally have good health! Most will enjoy a long, happy life. Exercise and tender loving care are also things to consider for them. They like to be groomed often and will accept any attention you give them, especially petting. A lot of goldens love to play in the water and go swimming. But most of all, their biggest joy is in retrieving anything that you will throw for them.

Although puppies are very cute, you need to consider these items before you decide to purchase your golden. Please consider them very seriously:

  • A golden puppy becomes approximately a 12-year commitment

  • Daily care

  • A safe place while you are away from home

  • What to do and how to handle a puppy when they chew things

  • Recommended basic obedience training

  • Grooming

  • Above all, you must be patient and committed to your new dog or puppy

Standards of the breed set by AKC:

Standard weight = Males 65-75 pounds

Standard height = Males 23-24 inches

Standard weight = Females 55-65 pounds

Standard height = Females 21 1/2 to 22 1/2 inches
